- American students today rank 25th in the world in math, 17th in science, and 14th in reading.
- Two out of three eighth-graders in America can’t read proficiently, nearly two-thirds of eighth-graders scored below proficient in math and nearly three out of four students from grades 8-12 cannot write proficiently.
- And the average of dropouts across the country is 27 percent.
- America must strive to reform its education system to resemble characteristics like that of Finland's education system. Finland's education system is one of the best in the world, the high school graduation rate in finland is 93 percent. Their students are number one in the world in reading and science.
- They achieve such great success by getting rid of standardized testing, in fact finnish children are not measured at all for the first six years of their education.
- They also achieve success because their teachers are selected from the top 10 percent of graduates. And they do all of this while still spending 30 percent less per student than the United States.
Debates:
Education
Hello my fellow americans. My name is Ryan McNeill and i am running for Secretary of Education alongside my president and vice president David Di Biase and Mike Maniscalco. Today i will address the problems with education as it is today and implement new ideas to solve them.
- Common core was intended to create learning goals and launched this effort to ensure all students, regardless of where they live, are graduating high school prepared for college, career, and life bearing introductory courses in two- or four-year college programs or enter the workforce. This is done by creating standards for all students and teachers to reach. But These standards are not how future generations should be taught.
- The common core creates standards for teachers and students based on grades achieved in school. This was designed to make sure that school faculty always meets the standard. If these standards were not met every year, consequences would be given out to these teachers. But they require the students to read more challenging types of literature. In math they require them to learn harder math topics to get them prepared for the next year. Its harder for kids to maintain a standard if they have a harder curriculum. This way of education is unfair because every generation is different in the way they learn. Standardize testing should not be the way of teaching our future generations.
- In America we have claims that we are encountering an education crisis. But i ensure you that we are not. We have a bigger population compared to other countries. This means they have less kids that can do poorly in high school. Also we have very good education systems as it is today. We aim to educate ALL of our students. It doesn’t matter if you’re economically disadvantaged, have a learning disability, are a student of color, or aren’t proficient in English, you have a right to a quality education in this country.
- We have to create more teaching jobs so that we can ensure that each and every one of our children will have a bigger and brighter future. But this is not only a job for the teachers our parents and guardians will need to help by leading the children to think strongly about education. Some places don't have that but we need to lead our children to have a better picture on their opinion on school. We will create these jobs by cutting programs that don’t help the education system anymore. We need teachers that will prosper in the way they teach our children.
- We do not believe that standardize testing is relevant in the way we educate students. Students learn by having more interactions with a certain topic. There should be one test and it should be at the end of the year. Also it cost more money to use this. Annual state spending on standardized tests rose from $423 million to almost $1.1 billion. We are spending countless dollars on programs that we should not use.
- Standardize testing shows what you knew in the beginning of the year compared to the end. Which is good to some points because it shows whether a teacher is doing his/her job. But there are other ways of doing this. Standardize testing is also more money compared to what we were doing before. It has more than double the amount of education costs. Studies also say that there is a slight positive effect for students. But these tests cause jitters and can cause students to make the slightest mistake and do poorly on these test.
- Schools should administer a sampling survey of math and literacy. National education policy emphasizes a wide range of approaches to assessment, including presentations, performances and reports. These are designed to measure skills like creativity, students well being and technological literacy as well as traditional academics. Schools and teachers have a lot of control over the methods of evaluation.
- Teachers will be able to test their students at the end of each year, also throughout the year they will have projects and presentations to see if they know what they were learning about. If they meet these qualifications the teachers will know if they are ready to take another step into college.
- Financial aid is currently providing a substantial amount of help for student that are in need and that can't afford college. But another way to make college more affordable is to make sure that every student is succeeding in high school academics. They can earn scholarships and college credits for certain classes that they take. These small steps will provide students with a bigger and brighter future.
- Yes i agree, students from these generations are our future. They will come out to be engineers, doctors and our presidents. These people will find cure for things we couldn't before. They will invent things that are extremely helpful to everyday life. We need students of these generations to prosper in our education system today. So they can do well in the future.
- I believe my plans are more efficient and cost less money than the other candidates. I also believe that my team and I have a very strong bond and can implement new ideas throughout the changing times.
- One reason why you should trust my campaign team is because of the mindset of our team as well as our new exciting ideas. i believe that the David and mike campaign can and will prosper in the way we will run this country.
